From Sharon Freeman
I am involved in the Forest Edge South Neighbourhood Development Plan which was set up and is overseen by West Dean Parish Council.
We have a Steering Group made up of people from the six villages of Whitecroft, Parkend, Pillowell, Yorkley, Viney Hill and Oldcroft , all volunteers . Since the opportunity arose 4 years ago for us to try and have more influence over really important issues like the type and number of houses being built in our villages we have held open public consultation days in Whitecroft and Parkend Memorial Hall, Pillowell Village Hall and the Community Centre at Yorkley.
Today all local households will receive in the post , a survey commissioned by the project to try and find out what residents feel about the provision of housing, especially affordable housing locally.
The Steering Group are really concerned about the complete lack of affordable housing both to buy and rent locally and are aware that many others feel the same . Are we now getting to stage where our children and grandchildren will not be able to buy or rent good housing in this beautiful part of the country as those of us who are older have been able to do in the past ? The only way we locals can influence the type of development around us is by letting the authorities know how we feel so please don’t ignore the Housing Needs Survey .

What is a Neighbourhood Development Plan?
A Neighbourhood Development Plan (NDP) is a document which relates to land use and planning issues. It is produced by people in the community for their community.
Forest Edge South covers these Forest of Dean villages – Parkend, Yorkley, Pillowell, Oldcroft & Viney Hill and Whitecroft and is the vision for planning, policies, land allocation and also defining specific facilities for each distinct area which will be reflected in the final plan.
When it has gone through all the required stages, including examination and referendum, the NDP becomes a statutory document. It will be referred to when planning applications are received for the geographic area covered by the Plan.
